I don't know about your family but my family likes breads. And when I make a soup, it is almost a "given" that these will be there with it. These should rise like a bread, but don't worry if they don't, they still taste good if they flop.

Dumplings #1, (bread )*
1 1/2 level cups flour
2 level teaspoons baking powder
1 level teaspoon baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar, optional
1/2 to 3/4 cup whole milk, sometimes

Stir dry ingredients together. Then add milk.
Batter should be a sticky, gooey mass. Add more milk
to get proper consistency.
Use a serving tablespoon and drop, very, very gently
into a stew or soup or broth. Cover and bring to a boil
for 10 minutes. Uncover and cook another 10 minutes.
Be sure to check to make sure soup or stew is not
sticking on the bottom, as this will absorb water from
the soup.
When done, if you cut them open, they will look like
a loaf of bread does inside.
