    Red Cabbage, German

    1 shredded red cabbage
    1 tbsp. butter
    1/2 lb. sliced onions
    1 lb. sliced apples
    2 garlic cloves
    1/4 tsp. nutmeg
    1/4 tsp. allspice
    1/4 tsp. cinnamon
    1/4 tsp. thyme
    1/4 tsp. caraway
    salt and pepper
    2 tbsp. brown sugar
    a little more than 2 c. wine
    2 tbsp. wine vinegar

    Melt the butter in a Dutch oven type or size pot.
    Cook the cabbage in the butter, covered, for 5 minutes.
    Add the onions and apples, toss to coat.
    Then add everything else and cook slowly on the stove top for 6 hours.
