    SLICE AND BAKE COOKIES

    Source of Recipe

    An old family recipe.

    Recipe Introduction

I'm not positive, but I think this is the one that my grandmother used.

    List of Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1/2 cup shortening
    • 1 egg yolk
    • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
    • 1 1/2 cup flour
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 3 tbsp milk
    • 1 oz square unsweetened chocolate, melted

    Instructions

    1. Cream sugar and shortening together, stir in egg yolk and vanilla.
    2. Combine flour, salt and baking powder. Stir alternately with milk into sugar mixture to make a soft dough.
    3. Divide dough in half. Add melted chocolate to one half and mix throroughly.
    4. On waxed paper, roll out each half into rectangles, 1/8" thick. Turn white dough onto chocolate dough. Remove waxed paper and roll up like a jelly roll.
    5. Wrap in waxed paper; refrigerate for up to one week if you don't want to make them all at once.
    6. Slice the dough into 1/8 or 1/4" thick slices. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes, depending on the thickness.
    7. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
