    Recipe

    Grandma's Buttermilk Biscuits

    2 cups all purpose flour
    1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    1 tablespoon baking powder
    1/2 cup butter (or crisco)
    1/2 teaspoon salt
    1 cup buttermilk

Place dry ingredients into a bowl. Cut in shortening until it becomes crumbly like cornmeal. Add buttermilk and stir just until moistened.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Fold dough 3 or 4 times (don't overhandle or biscuits will be tough). Roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut out biscuits with biscuit cutter and place on lightly greased baking sheet.

Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until golden brown in a preheated 450ºF oven.

    Yields one dozen biscuits.

*Hint: For crispy biscuits make sure the biscuits don't touch in the pan, and for softer biscuits let the sides touch each other.
