    Soft and Chewy Ginger Cookies

    Source of Recipe

    internet

    List of Ingredients

    3/4 C. softened shortening
1 C. light brown sugar, packed
    1 egg
    1/4 C. molasses
    2 1/4 C. flour
    2 tsp. baking soda
    1/4 tsp. salt
    1/2 tsp. cloves
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1 tsp. ginger

    Recipe

Mix shortening, sugar, egg and molasses. Stir in remaining ingredients. Chill dough for one hour. Heat oven to 375ºF. Roll dough into balls the size of walnuts, dip tops in sugar. Place sugared side up on greased baking sheet. Sprinkle cookies with 2–3 drops of water each for a crackled surface. Bake 10-12 minutes. Makes four dozen.

Notes: I copied this recipe exactly as written on the back of the bottle. I rolled the whole dough ball in sugar, not just the top half. I also used parchment paper on my baking sheets, I never grease my cookie sheets, ever. In my gas oven, I baked the cookies for just ten minutes and they were perfect. The water thing really does work, I tried it.
