tippytoes's SHAKER PICKLES

1 small onion
1/2 bulb of garlic
dill heads
1/2 cup canning salt
1/2 cup sugar
2 cups vinegar
water
Recipe
Slice cucumbers lengthwise.
In a glass gallon jar, layer some of the dill heads, chunks of onion and garlic. Pack a layer of sliced cucumbers (standing upright) on top of the dill/onion/garlic. Repeat layers and end with another head of dill, onion and garlic on top.
In a bowl mix the sugar, salt and vinegar and stir to dissolve the sugar a bit. Pour this over the pickles and fill the rest of the gallon jar with water.
Shake to mix. Leave it set on the counter for 3 days, shaking once every day. After 3 days, refrigerate. This will keep up to a year or longer in the refrigerator.
Note: Hot peppers can be added if you like pickles with 'heat'.
