    Cake:
    1 cup vegetable shortening
    1-1/4 cups sugar
    1-1/2 cups flour
    1 cup milk
    4 eggs beaten
    1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
    2 cups self-rising flour

    Recipe



    Mix sugar and shortening and blend well. Add eggs, beating
    thoroughly. Add vanilla. Add milk and flour, alternating between
    milk and flour. Place batter into 2 greased and floured 9-inch
    cake pans and bake until firm and golden brown, about 15-20
    minutes in a 350 degree preheated oven. Check for doneness with a
    cake tester or toothpick. Set layers aside to cool completely.

    Strawberries:
    3 cups sliced strawberries (save a few whole berries for
    decoration)
    3 cups mashed strawberries
    1-1/4 cups sugar, divided

    Add 1/2 cup sugar to 3 cups sliced strawberries and stir to
    combine. Set aside or place in the refrigerator until ready to
    use. Add remaining 3/4 cup sugar to 3 cups mashed strawberries
    and stir to combine. Set aside or place in the refrigerator until
    ready to use.

    Whipped cream:
    2 cups heavy cream
    4 tablespoons sugar
    1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

    Beat the cream until frothy, add the sugar and vanilla and
    continue beating until stiff peaks form.
