AuGratin Casserole

Recipe Introduction
A favorite at pot-lucks as a side dish or with the ham as a main dish.
List of Ingredients
- 3 LRG potatoes peeled & thinly sliced
- 1/2 Lb. extra-sharp cheddar-cheese grated
- 1 Cup cubed ham [using a thick ham steak is easy]
- 2 Cups Chicken Stock
- 4oz. Heavy Cream
- 3 TBSP coarse dijon mustard
- 1 TBSP flour [to dust over grated cheese]
- *1/2 TBSP Thyme
- *1 tspn salt
- *1/2 tspn pepper
- 1-2Cups of preferred crumbs [i like the japanese Panko]
- 1/2 stick softened butter [inside of a ziplock baggie]
Instructions
- PreHeat Oven to 350*
- Generously butter a casserole dish
[an oval dish eliminates dried out / crispy corners]
- mix the "*" items [thyme, salt & pepper] together to make a spice blend.
- Blend heavy cream and mustard into the chicken stock to make a sauce.
- using 1/3 of potatoes, line bottom of casserole dish overlapping slices.
- use 1/3 of ham to layer over potatoes.
- use 1/3 of cheese to layer over ham.
- use 1/3 of spice blend to sprinkle over cheese.
- use 1/3 of sauce to pour over spices & cheese.
- Repeat layering steps Twice more.
- Cover dish with casserole lid or foil and place in preheated 350* oven.
- Bake for 30-40 mins.
- Remove dish from oven.
Remove cover from dish.
- Place crumbs into ziplock bag, seal and massage bag, creaming the butter into the crumbs.
- Spoon crumbs to top casserole then place back in oven to bake for an additional 35 mins Uncovered.
