ROOT BEER CRUNCH

2 quarts popped popcorn
1 cup salted pecans
1 12 oz bottle root beer
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/2 cup butter
1/4 teaspoon salt
Preheat oven to 250f (121c). Combine popcorn and pecans in a large 4" deep buttered baking pan. Keep warm in the oven. Butter 2 cookie sheets. Pour root beer slowly down the side of a large saucepan. Add sugar, corn syrup, butter, and salt. Stir gently but well. Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar melts. Cook until mixture reaches 250f (121c) on a candy thermometer. Remove popcorn and pecans from oven. Pour syrup mixture over popcorn and pecans. Mix well. Spread on buttered cookie sheets and separate into pieces. Cool and store air tight. Makes 2 1/4 quarts.

NOTES : Variation: Substitute a cola, uncola or other soft drink for root beer.
