    2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
    1/2 cup granulated sugar
    1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    3/4 teaspoon baking soda
    1/4 teaspoon salt
    6 tablespoons unsalted butter
    1 cup buttermilk
    1 egg yolk
    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
    1/4 cup sliced almonds (optional

    Recipe

    Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, soda and
    salt. Cut in butter to a fine crumb. Mix buttermilk, egg yolk and
    vanilla. Stir milk mixture into flour just until dough holds
    together. Do not overwork dough. Roll dough lightly to 1/2-inch. Cut
    in 2 1/2- to 3-inch rounds. On parchment- or waxed-paper-lined baking
    sheet, brush dough with buttermilk. Top with sliced almonds. Bake 15
    minutes or until golden. Let cool before slicing. Use as shortcake
    base or as desired. Makes 8 to 10 biscuits.
