    List of Ingredients

    1 cup lukewarm milk

    1/4 cup sugar

    1 tablespoon salt

1 (.6 ounce) cake compressed yeast

    1 egg

    1/4 cup shortening

    31/2 cups flour

    Dash cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg

11/2 cups vegetable oil for deep frying

Decorating options: confectioner's sugar, colored sugar, sprinkles, raisins, honey, syrup or maple cream

    Recipe

    1. Combine the milk, sugar and salt. Next, crumble your yeast into the mix and stir until the yeast is dissolved. Stir in the egg and shortening and then add the flour, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg. Knead the dough until it's too beaten down to offer any more resistance, then place in a greased bowl and turn it to bring the greased side up. Let the dough rise in a warm place until it's doubled in bulk (about an hour to an hour and a half).

    2. When the dough has gotten itself all puffed up as men, er, dough is known to do, smack it down with your fist until it's completely deflated. Then let it puff up again, which you know it will, until it's almost twice its original size (about 30-45 minutes). Then, roll out the dough on a floured board until the dough is -1/3-inch thick and cut with a ginger man cookie cutter.

    3. Let your men rise for another 30-45 minutes and then heat your fat, throw your men into a deep, heavy frying pan (to about 375 degrees), and let them stay there until you can stick a fork in them and turn them over. Drain on paper towels and let cool.

    4. To decorate, make a glaze out of 2 parts confectioner's sugar and 1 part water, or use colored sugar, sprinkles, or even raisins to personalize your fried men. Then drown them in honey, syrup or maple cream and masticate them, one limb at a time.

Makes 6-12 (depending upon whether you like your fried men large or bite size)
