    List of Ingredients

    1/2 cup warm water

1 package (1/4 ounce) dry active yeast

    1 cup milk

2 ounces (4 tablespoons) cold butter

    1 egg, beaten

    41/2 cups all-purpose flour

    2 tablespoons sugar

    11/2 teaspoons salt

    Recipe

    1. Place 1/2 cup warm water in a large mixing bowl. Sprinkle yeast over water. Stir and let stand 5 minutes.

    2. Scald milk and butter until butter is melted. Add to yeast mixture. Add beaten egg.

    3. Combine flour, sugar and salt. Add 2 cups to the liquid mixture and stir with a spatula or wooden spoon. Add remaining dry ingredients, 1/2 cup at a time, until dough comes together.

    4. Transfer to a lightly floured surface and knead by hand for 5-8 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

    5. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled.

    6. To make 1 dozen buns, divide dough into 12 equal pieces, approximately 3 ounces each. For larger buns, divide dough into 6 pieces, using about 6 ounces of dough. Roll each piece into a tight ball and roll the ball into a rope about 6-8 inches long. Place the ropes of dough on a lined and lightly greased baking sheet. Let rise in a warm place, 30 minutes.

    7. Bake in a pre-heated 400-degree oven 15-20 minutes or until lightly golden.

    8. Cool the buns on a wire rack. Split each bun on one side.

    Makes 12.
