Breaking Bread with Father Dominic
It's easy to make your fresh-baked bread look as if it came out of the oven of a professional baker. Choose any of these variations to give your bread extra color, shine and flavor.
Water
For a crisp crust, brush or lightly spray dough with water just before putting bread in the oven.
Milk
For a slightly soft, tender crust, brush loaves with milk just before baking.
Egg
For extra shine, brush dough just before baking with one egg or egg white beaten with a little water.
Butter or Margarine
Brushing butter on bread just out of the oven gives less shine, but a rich golden-brown color and buttery flavor.
Seeded Breads
Brush unbaked loaves with an egg white wash and then sprinkle on poppy seeds, caraway seeds, sesame seeds or rolled oats.
Slashing
For a professional looking loaf, after dough rises, glaze and slash top with sharp knife, cutting about 1/4 inch deep.
