1824: A1 Steak Sauce is created for England's King George IV. Isn't officially named until 1873.
1870: Margarine was created in Provence, France in response to an offer by the Emperor Louis Napoleon III for the
production of a satisfactory substitute for butter.

1897: Condensed soup is invented by Campbell's. By eliminating the water in canned soup, it cost less to package, ship and
store.
1876: Hires Root Beer foams up

1892: A coffee developed for the Maxwell House Hotel in Nashville became so popular the hotel owner orders no other
coffee be served to guests. Becomes Maxwell House coffee
1900: Hershey starts making milk chocolate bars
1906: Kellogg's Corn Flakes available to the public
1907: Hershey makes Kisses. At first, they were wrapped by hand. It wasn't until 1921 a machine did the wrapping.
1911: Crisco shortening introduced as new way of cooking: alternative to animal fats and cheaper than butter.
1916: Kraft develops processed cheese. Growing up in Ontario, J.L. Kraft was annoyed at the wastefulness that came of
selling cheese. He set out to modify it to keep better, cook better, minimize waste and be sold in convenient sizes.
1920: Eskimo Pie, America's first chocolate covered ice cream bar, comes out of the freezer. Inspired by a boy's indecision
at a general store who wanted ice cream a chocolate bar, but could only afford one. Were first called I-Scream Bars
1921: The rise of Wonder bread
1929: Canada's first frozen food: a fish fillet: is sold
1937: SPAM is born. By 1959, one billion cans were sold
1937: A new era in fast, easy meals begins with Kraft Dinner. Today more than 7 million boxes are sold each week
1941: M&M's Plain Chocolate Candies were first introduced to the public after earning solid reputation from American GIs in
World War II who'd had them in their food rations.
1950s: First frozen French fry is fried
1952: First diet soft drink pops up
1959: First diet cola is introduced
1953: Before cable and even colour there were Swanson TV dinners: introduced just as TVs came on the scene
1953: JELL-O Instant Pudding promoted as "busy day desserts." It's never too late for real homemade desserts.
1954: Burger King sizzles for the first time in Miami. Now has more than 11,220 restaurants in 61 countries worldwide
1955: First McDonald's opens in Des Plaines, Illinois.
1957: The first poutine is concocted in Quebec
1958: Pizza Hut is hauled out of the oven by two college students from Kansas
1962: Ottawa scientist Edward Asselbergs invents instant mashed potato flakes
1965: Shake 'N Bake comes out of the oven
1967: Canada's first McDonald's and the first to open outside the U.S. open in Richmond, BC
1969: Burger King crosses the border and opens in Windsor, Ontario. Canada now has 345 locations
1988: Oscar Mayer introduces Lunchables after survey found making bagged lunches topped the list of working women's
biggest mealtime hassles. Became best-selling product in company history.
