    For dough
    3 cups flour
    1 tablespoon cinnamon
    Pinch of salt
    Pinch of black pepper
    1/2 cup softened butter or margarine
    3 beaten eggs
    1 1/2 tablespoons water
    For filling:
    1 cup dark Karo syrup, divided use
    1/2 cup pine nuts, plus additional for garnish
    1 cup ground walnuts, medium grind
    1 (48 ounce) bottle vegetable oil

    To prepare dough: Mix flour, cinnamon, salt and pepper together in a bowl. Add butter and mix until granular. Make a well and add eggs and water. Mix until well blended.

    Turn dough out onto a floured board and roll into a circle about 18 inches in diameter.

    Pour 1/2 cup Karo syrup over dough and spread with a spatula. Sprinkle pine nuts and walnuts evenly over syrup.

    Roll dough up as if you were making a jelly roll. Then, starting at one end, wind the roll around itself like a snail's shell. Hold roll together with toothpicks.

    Fill a large heavy skillet or kettle with enough vegetable oil to cover dough, or use an electric deep fryer. Heat oil until it is sizzling and carefully add filled dough ball. If you're not using an electric deep fryer, you may need to turn the dough once or twice to ensure it browns evenly. Cook for 10 minutes to insure inside is cooked. Finished dish will be dark brown.

    When cool, pour another 1/2 cup Karo syrup over the top and let it sink in. Sprinkle top with more pine nuts.

    Serves 16
