Recipe
Cream butter for 30 seconds in a large mixer bowl. Blend in sugar, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Mix in as much of the flour as possible with mixer. Use a wooden spoon to stir in any remaining flour.
2. Cover and chill 1 hour or until dough is firm. Preheat oven to 375°F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls and place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet.
3. Bake 8-10 minutes, or until edges are lightly brown. Transfer to wire rack; let cool. Decorate with colored glaze as desired. Allow glaze to set up or dry before storing in airtight container.
4. To prepare the glaze: Combine milk and vanilla extract; stir in confectioners' sugar. Adjust the consistency as needed by adding a bit more water to thin or more confectioners' sugar to stiffen. Blend in 3 to 4 drops food color until evenly distributed and glaze is smooth. If desired, divide the icing among separate small bowls and tint each one with a different color by stirring in 1 to 2 drops food color.
*Use regular, full fat butter or margarine for best results
