Bavarian Apple Pot Roast

2 T. shortening
3 lb. Chuck Roast
1 t. salt, 3/4 t. gr. ginger
1 bay leaf, 5 whole cloves
1/4 t. black pepper
1 C. apple juice
1/2 C. dry red wine
4 golden delicious apples, cored and cut into quarters
1 onion, slicedRecipe
In lrg. skillet or dutch oven, heat shortening. Add the roast and brown on all sides. In a medium bowl, combine; salt, ginger, cloves, bay leaf, pepper, apple juice and wine. Pour over meat in the pan. Bring mixture to a boil. lower heat and simmer covered for 2 hours. Place apple and onion slices around meat. Simmer covered another 30 minutes or until meat is tender. Remove meat to a platter and surround with the apple and onion slices.
Serves 6-8
***I like to just put it all into a crockpot on low after I've browned the meat and let it cook all day***
