Fried Green Tomatoes

4 large green tomatoes
1 + 1/3 c. milk (divided use)
1 3/4 c. flour
1/4 c. cornmeal
4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. Old Bay seasoning (optional
4 large eggs
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 c. vegetable oil
Recipe
Cut the stem hard core out of the tomato and thinly slice off the
opposite end. Cut the tomato cross-grain in 1/4'' slices.
Place tomato slices in a large shallow dish and pour on 1 c. of the milk.
Let stand for 10 to 20 minutes.
In a separate mixing bowl, mix together the flour, cornmeal, baking
powder, salt and Old Bay seasoning.
Beat the eggs vigorously and add to the flour mixture along with the
sugar and the 1/3 c. of milk.
Stir to blend into a smooth batter.
Heat the oil in a deep frying pan until very hot (365 to 370 on a candy
thermometer).
Remove tomato slices from the milk a few at a time, dip into the
batter and fry in the hot oil until golden brown on both sides.
Cook for about 1 minute then turn and cook for another minute.
Remove cooked tomato slices from the oil and drain on paper towels.
The cooked tomato slices may be kept warm for a few minutes until
ready to serve by placing on a serving platter in the oven preheated
to 200 with the door partially open.
