    Testing Baking Soda

All boxes of baking soda are stamped with an expiration date on the bottom--not stamped in ink, it indented into the cardboard -- you really have to look.
If you're still not sure, put a couple Tablespoons of white vinegar into a glass.
Add about a teaspoon of baking soda.
If the soda is still potent, the mixture will froth up.

You can test baking powder, too.

Stir a small amount of baking powder into a glass of warm water.
It should foam & froth if it is still good.
And don't forget that if your baking soda isn't good for baking anymore, it's still OK for scrubbing, tooth brushing, etc. & you can always pour it down the sink to make the disposal smell nice!
