    New Orleans Chocolate Spice Cake

    Better Homes and Gardens Cookbook, about 1973.


    List of Ingredients


    • 2 c. flour
    • 2 c. sugar
    • 1 tsp. baking soda
    • 1 tsp. salt
    • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
    • 3/4 c. wter
    • 3/4 c. buttermilk
    • 1/2 c. shortening
    • 2 eggs
    • 4 oz. unsweetened chocolate
    • 1 tsp. cloves


    Instructions


    1. Mix all ingredients. Pour into greased and floured pans (either 9x13" oblong or 8-9" round). Bake at 350^ for 40-45 minutes (9x13") or 30-35 minutes (round).

    2. EMERGENCY SUBSTITUTIONS:Buttermilk: 1 Tbsp. lemon juice or vinegar plus milk to make 1 cup.1 oz. square chocolate: 3 Tbsp. cocoa plus 1 Tbsp. butter or margarine.
