Apple Upside Down Cake

1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup light brown sugar
2 1/2 cup sliced apples (raw)
3/4 tsp. ground mace
2 tsp. lemon juice
1/3 cup shortening
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 cup sifted four
2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
2/3 cup milk
Melt butter in 8x8 inch pan; sprinkle with brown sugar. Drain
apples.
Arrange, overlapping edges, on sugar. Sprinkle with mace and
lemon
juice. Cream shortening, sugar and vanilla together. Add egg and
beat.
Add sifted ingredients alternately with milk. Pour batter over
fruit.
Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour. Turn upside down on serving pate.
Makes 8 servings.
