1/3 cup fine crushed peppermint candy,1/3 cup sugar,1/2 cup shortening,1/2 cup butter,1 cup sifted powdered sugar,1 beat egg,1 teas.vanilla,1 teas.almond extract,2 1/2 cup flour,1 teas.salt,1/2 teas.red food color.Recipe
Oven 375*.Combine candy,1/3 cup sugar in sm.bowl,mix.Set aside.Cream shortening,butter,in lrg.bowl.Gradually add 1 cup sugar,beat till fluffy.Add egg,flavorings,mix.Stir in flour,salt.Divide dough in 1/2,tint 1/2 dough with food color.Shape tinted and plain dough by teas.into 4 1/2" rolls on floured surface.Place a tinted and a plain roll side by side,twist together.Curve one end into a cane shape.Repeat.Put on ungreased sheets,2" apart,bake 8-9 mins.Put on racks to cool,(opt;while they are still warm,sprinkle with more crushed candy).
