    Mealworm Chocolate Chip Cookies

    Source of Recipe

Submitted by Brandon Johnstun From www.eatbug.com

    Recipe Introduction

This is a good recipe to start on. Having taught survival classes for military and civilians for over 20 years, I have eaten just about everything. There are many things to try and eat. Travel to central and south America will get you many bugs in your tacos and meals, on purpose. Africa, Asia, the Americas still eat bugs daily. Great sources of protiens.

    List of Ingredients

    Tools

    Bowl
    Stirring spoon
    Measuring cup
    Measuring spoon, 1/2 Tsp
    Mixer
    Baking sheet
    Cooling rack
    Spatula
    Hot pads

    Ingredients

    1/2 C Butter
    1/2 C Brown sugar
    1/2 C White sugar
    1 Egg
    1/2 Tsp Vanilla
    1 C Flour
    1/2 Tsp Salt
    1/2 Tsp Baking soda
    1/2 C Oats
    1/2 C Chocolate chips
    1/4 C Mealworm flour

    Recipe

Serves: Quite a few when you tell them what it is.
Time required: Prepare: 5 minutes Cook: 1 hour
    Oven temperature: 375 degrees
    Difficulty: Average

    Directions

    1. Preheat oven to

    2. Cream butter well.

    3. Mix in sugar, egg, vanilla flour, salt, baking soda, chocolate chips, oats, and mealworm flour.

    4. Drop batter by the teaspoonful on a greased cookie sheet.

    5. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees.

NOTE: This recipe doesn't have much in the way of palpable insect content, but is an excellent way to introduce others (or yourself!) to entomophagy. Even many rather squeamish people will try mealworm cookies, since the cookie format doesn't look "gross" to most people, and since it is rather difficult to actually taste the mealworms, though they enrich the cookie with a somewhat nutty flavor and extra protein.

    To make insect flour:

    1. Spread your cleaned insects on a lightly greased cookie sheet.

    2. Dry insects for approximately 1-3 hours in 200 degree oven. When the insects are done, they should be fairly brittle and crush easily.

    3. Put dried insects into blender or coffee grinder. Grind till they are about the consistency of wheat germ.

NOTE: Use in practically any recipe! Try sprinkling insect flour on salads, add it to soups, your favorite bread recipe, on a boat, with a goat, etc.

    Serve with

A glass of milk to your mother and grandmother. Then tell and show them what they ate.

    Variations

*Use the regular recipe for Tollhouse cookies, just add some of the insect flour for the regular flour.
