FOR COOKIES:
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 tablespoons orange juice
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 1/2 cups flour
BUTTERCREAM ICING:
3 cups Confectioners sugar
1/3 cup butter
1 or 2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
SUGAR GLAZE:
2 cups Confectioners sugar
4 teaspoons light corn syrup
4 teaspoons milk
Food coloring (optional)
Recipe
Mix first six ingredients with electric mixer until fluffy. Gradually stir in flour by hand until well mixed. Chill 2 or 3 hours in refrigerator until firm enough to roll out with rolling pin. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Roll out half of the dough at a time on a floured board until 1/8" to 1/4" thick. Cut with your cutters, sharp edge down, and place cookies on ungreased cookie sheet.
Decorate at this stage with colored sugar crystals, sprinkles, raisins, or nuts, or leave plain for decorating with icing after baking.
Bake 6 - 10 minutes at 400 degrees F until edges of cookie are light brown. Remove from cookie sheet and cool on wire rack. When cool, use icing for decorating by spreading evenly over whole cookies and applying sugar crystals, etc., or use icing bag and tips for outline details, facial features, clothing, etc.
