Cherry-Plum Slump
List of Ingredients
New England's slump is topped with biscuit dumplings, which flatten or "slump" during cooking. In Cape Cod, a slump may be known as a grunt--presumably the sound the fruit makes as it bubbles on the stove.
2 cups sliced, pitted plums
1 cup pitted sweet cherries
3/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
3 Tbsp. butter or margarine
1/3 cup milk
Recipe
In a 3-quart saucepan combine fruit, 1/2 cup of the sugar, and 3/4 cup water Bring to boiling; reduce heat.
Meanwhile, for dumplings, stir together flour, 1/4 cup remaining sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon salt. Cut in butter to resemble coarse crumbs. Add milk, stirring just to moisten.
Spoon dough in 6 mounds atop hot filling. Cover and simmer about 15 minutes or till a toothpick inserted in the dumplings comes out clean. Serve warm. Makes 6 servings.
