Cherry Cheese Bars

For the crust:
1 cup walnuts, divided
1 1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
1/2 cup butter flavor shortening
1/2 cup flaked coconut
For the filling:
2 8-ounce packages cream cheese, softened
2/3 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 21-ounce can cherry pie filling Recipe
Chop 1/2 cup
of walnuts coarsely for topping and set aside. Chop remaining walnuts finely. Combine flour and brown sugar and cut in shortening until fine crumbs form. Add finely chopped walnuts and coconut and mix well. Remove 1/2 cup of the crumb mixture and set aside. Press remaining crumb mixture in the bottom of a greased 9-by-13-inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, until edges are lightly browned. Beat cream cheese, sugar, eggs and vanilla until smooth. Spread over hot baked crust and return to oven. Bake 15 minutes longer. Spread cherry pie filling over cheese layer. Combine coarsely chopped walnuts and remaining crumb mixture and sprinkle evenly over cherries. Return to oven and bake 15 minutes longer. Let cool and refrigerate for several hours. Cut into 2-by-1 1/2-inch bars.
