    List of Ingredients


    • 4 cups all purpose flour
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 1 tsp baking powder
    • 1 cup shortening
    • 4 egg yolks
    • 2 tbsp lemon juice
    • 8-10 tbsp cold water
    • Filling:
    • 7 cups finely chopped peeled apples
    • 2 cups sugar
    • 1/4 cup all purpose flour
    • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
    • dash ground nutmeg
    • Glaze:
    • 1 cup icing sugar
    • 1 tbsp milk
    • 1 tbsp lemon juice


    Instructions


    1. In a large bowl,combine flour,salt and baking powder. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    2. In a small bowl, whisk egg yolks,lemon juice and water; gradually add to flour mixture,tossing with a fork until dough forms a ball.
    3. Divide in half. Chill for 30 min.
    4. Roll out one portion of dough between two large sheets of waxed paper into a 17inchx12inch rectangle. Transfer to an ungreased 15 inch x10inch x1inch baking pan. Press pastry onto the bottom and up the sides of pan;trim pastry even with top edge.
    5. In a bowl,toss the apple,sugar,flour, cinnamon and nutmeg;spread over crust.Roll out remaining pastry to fit top of pan; place over filling.Trim edges;brush edges between pastrry with water or milk; pinch to seal.
    6. Cut slits in top. Bake at 375. for 45-50 min. or until golden brown. Cool ona wire rack. Combine glaze ingredients until smooth; drizzle over bars before cutting.
