    Buttermilk Biscuits

    Source of Recipe

    Better Homes & Gardens

    List of Ingredients

    3 C all purpose flour
    4 tsp baking powder
    1 T sugar
    1 tsp salt
    3/4 tsp cream of tartar
1 stick of butter, cold, cut into small cubes
    1/4 cup regular Crisco
    1 1/4 cups buttermilk (not non-fat)
    Melted butter, optional but encouraged

    Recipe

    Preheat oven to 450.

In a food processor with a metal blade, put everything except the buttermilk. Pulse until the butter and shortening are incorporated into the flour. Pour the flour mixture out into a large bowl. Using a wooden spoon, stir in the buttermilk... be gentle, you don't want to overwork the dough. If the dough is dry, you can add a little more buttermilk.

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead gently just a couple times until the dough comes together. Pat or roll out to a square about an inch thick. Use a pizza cutter or a biscuit cutter and cut as desired. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet, and brush tops with melted butter if desired.

Bake at 450 for 10-12 minutes (I have to bake mine for at least 15, but ovens vary). Serve immediately.

Also can be reheated very nicely in a 400 oven for about 5-7 minutes.
