Chop dates, combine with water, sugar, and nuts. Cook over low heat until thick like jam.
Dough:
2 c. sfted flour
1 c. brown sugar, firmly packed
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. butter
2 c. rolled oats
1/2 c. vegetable shortening
Recipe
Sift flour, baking soda, and baking powder into mixing bowl. Stir in the oats and sugar. Work in the butter and shortening with your fingers, until crumbly. Grease a 9x13 pan and press down with finger tips half of the dough mixture. Top with cooled date filing. Top with remaining crumbs. Bake in a pre-heated oven, 350 degrees, for 45 minutes. Cut when cooled.
