Recipe Introduction
Vanilla pudding is a delicious, creamy dessert that has been around in America since the 19th century. The history of pudding is closely related to the custards of Ancient Rome and the pudding recipes of Medieval Europe. In Ancient Rome, cooks recognized the binding properties of eggs which they used to create custard. These custards were used as filling for pies, tarts, and pastries. As time went on, pudding recipes emerged in Medieval Europe. These puddings could be made either savory and meat-based or sweet and made of flour, nuts, and sugar. Most historians agree that the modern recipe for American pudding is a combination of the Roman custard and Medieval pudding recipes.
Since their origin, pudding recipes have emerged into a variety of flavors and types of pudding including rice pudding, tapioca, arrowroot, and cornstarch pudding. Whether you choose store-bought or homemade, raise a spoon full of vanilla pudding today in honor of National Vanilla Pudding Day. You can even pair it with fresh fruit or chocolate for a delicious snack or dessert, yum!
