German Drop Doughnuts from David
2 cups flour
1/3 cup sugar
1 Tbsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking SODA
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon (optional)
1/4 tsp. nutmet and cloves (optional)
1 cup buttermilk or sourmilk (1 Tbsp. vinegar in a measuring cup and add sweet (regular) milk to make 1 cup...let set 5 minutes)
1 egg

Sugar and cinnamon for rolling doughnuts in.
Sift all dry ingredients together, then add buttermilk and egg...then mix well but do not overmix. Drop by tablespoons in deep hot fat (I use canola oil or plain Crisco)....and fry until brown...drain on brown paper sacks or on paper towels...then roll in sugar/cinnamon while still pretty warm. You could probably convert the recipe to sourdough if you wanted.
They are delicious!
