    Cheeseburger Pie


    1 deep dish pie crust
    1 pound ground beef
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon oregano
    1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    1/2 cup dry bread crumbs
    1 (8 oz) can tomato sauce
    1/4 cup chopped onion
    1/4 cup chopped bell pepper
    Cheese topping *recipe below*
    1 cup chili sauce

    Cheese Topping*

    1 egg
    1/4 cup milk
    1/2 teaspoon each salt, dry mustard and Worcestershire sauce
    2 cups (8 oz) shredded Cheddar cheese (sometimes I use Velveeta)

    Recipe





    Heat oven to 425°F. Have pie shell ready on the side. In medium skillet, cook and stir meat until brown and drain fat. Stir in salt, oregano, black pepper, crumbs, 1/2 cup the tomato sauce, onion and bell pepper; combine well. Turn into pie shell, gradually, pressing it down gently so that it fits into the pie shell. Spread cheese topping* on top of meat carefully. Bake about 30 minutes. Cut into wedges. In a separate small container, stir together remaining tomato sauce (4 oz) and the chili and serve on top of pie.

    Cheese Topping*

    Beat egg and milk together; stir in seasonings and cheese.

    NOTE: Can bake the night before and it's even better. Bring down to almost room temperature after cooking and cover with aluminum foil and place in refrigerator; it's easier to slice and the flavors mingle much like chili. Go ahead and prepare the topping and chili for serving it on the table.
