    Spicy Oriental Pea Pods

    1 lb pea pods, washed and trimmed
    3 T reduced-sodium soy sauce
    4 T rice vinegar
    2 T brown sugar
    1 T cornstarch
    1/2 t five spice powder
    1 t sesame oil
    1 clv garlic, chopped
    crushed red pepper (optional)

    Recipe



    Prepare pea pods. In a large saucepan bring water to a boil. Add
    the pea pods. Simmer uncovered for 2 minutes. Drain and cover
    with cold water. Prepare sauce. In a small bowl, combine the
    rice vinegar, brown sugar, cornstarch and five-spice powder. Stir
    until dissolved. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium
    heat. Add the garlic. Drain the pea pods and add to the skillet.
    Increase the heat. Stir in the sauce and cook until thickened.
    Serve immediately. Optional: Sprinkle with crushed red pepper for
    "heat." Makes 4 servings.

    Nutritional information: 75 calories, trace fat, 4 g protein,
    18 g carbohydrates, no cholesterol, 460 mg sodium, 1 g fiber.
