List of Ingredients
2 packages dry yeast
1/4 cup warm water
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups scalded milk
2 large eggs, beaten
3 teaspoons salt
6-7 cups bread flour or all-purpose flour, sifted
1/2 teaspoon ground sage
3/4 teaspoon thyme
3/4 teaspoon marjoram
1 teaspoon Italian parsley, minced. (If fresh, 1 Tablespoon)
1/2 cup shortening, melted
Recipe
Soften yeast in warm water, along with 1 tablespoon of the sugar. Cool milk, melt the shortening in it. Add milk, shortening, the remaining sugar, salt, eggs, and 2 cups of the flour to the yeast. Mix well and cover. Let rise in a warm place until bubbly (about 1 hour).
Combine the herbs and add to the mixture. Stir in the rest of the flour to make a stiff dough. Knead on floured board until satiny and elastic. Place in greased bowl, cover, and return to the warm place to rise until doubled in bulk (about 1 hour).
Punch dough down, let rest for 10 minutes and then shape into 2 loaves. Place in greased 9" x 5" x 3" loaf pans. Let rise until doubled in bulk (about 1-1 1/2 hours).
Makes 2 loaves.
