List of Ingredients




1 1/4 cups sugar
1 orange
1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs -- beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup pitted dates
2 cups cake flour
1 cup soured milk



Recipe



Combine 1/4 cup sugar and orange juice (squeezed from orange); stir until sugar is dissolved. Set aside.
Combine 1 cup sugar with shortening. Add eggs. Sift flour, measure and sift with baking powder, soda and salt. Add alternately with milk to shortening-egg mixture. Add dates (or raisins) which have been ground with the orange rind. Mix until well blended. Pour into well-oiled loaf pan. Bake at 375 F. for 45 minutes. Pour orange juice-sugar mixture over cake before removing from pan.
