Recipe Introduction
Note: This cake received the name during the first World War because it
contains no butter, eggs, milk, or granulated sugar.
List of Ingredients
War Cake
2 c. dark brown sugar
2 c. hot water
2 (heaping) tbsp. shortening
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground cloves
1 1# pkg. seedless raisins
1 c. chopped walnuts
3 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. soda dissolved in 1 tsp. hot water
Boil the first seven ingredients together five minutes after the mixture
begins to bubble. Set aside to cool; keep stirring often. Add the walnuts.
Gradually mix in the flour and soda. Batter will be very thick. Pour in two
greased loaf pans. Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Cake may be frosted with a vanilla butter cream frosting.
Yield: 18-20 servings
