Low Fat - No Fat Money Savers
I am all for either saving money or being able to
use what you have in your pantry/refrigerator when
preparing meals.
"MOST egg substitutes are nothing more
than egg whites with no fat and a little food dye
added to them. You can make your own by separating
an egg and being careful not to break the yolk.
The yolk is the part that has the fat and
cholesterol in the egg. The white is completely
fat free, otherwise it would not whip into peaks.
Another suggestion for "low fat or no fat
pancake/hot cakes is to simply replace the fat
with an equal amount of fruit puree. I like to use
applesauce." Those too can be a pantry item.
Applesauce is a wonderful substitute for oil in
cakes or in sweet breads such as banana bread. It
has the moisture without the oil.
Also, another "do-it-yourself, save-money type"
project.... put your favorite cooking oil in a
spray bottle. Use as a "non-stick" spray when
cooking. And if you use different flavor oils
such as olive and sesame, what great tastes to add
to your grilled foods without the calories.
