Recipe Introduction
Tin cans were developed in 1810 for Royal Navy rations, but they forgot to invent a can opener. For years, soldiers opened cans with bayonets or rifle fire. In 1824, the cans carried by Arctic explorer, William Perry, carried the instructions, "Cut round top with hammer and chisel". A can opener like we know today wasn't patented until 1870. It had a cutting wheel that rolled around the rim of the can. It was improved in 1924 when a feed wheel was added. This method was used for the first electric can openers that went on the market in 1931 - and that same basic design is still used today.
