    Strudels

    Source of Recipe

    Grandmother

    Recipe Introduction

We have these strudels at all our family Reunions, my grandmother used to come down every summer and make them for her children and their families. It is now a family tradition.

    List of Ingredients

    2 cups milk
    one fourth teaspoon baking powder
    2 eggs
About 5 cups of sifted flour
    FILLING
one half pound hamburger or hamburger and sausage mixture
    one half cup chopped onions

    Recipe

Put hamburger and onion in a covered sauce pan and cook slowly until onions are soft and meat is browned slightly. Stir occasionally. Season with salt and pepper. cool. Beat eggs slightly, add milk, then sift in dry ingr. to make a dough that can be rolled. The dough will be rather stretchy. Divide into 8 parts. Roll on floured board, working in more flour, if necessary, to keep from sticking. Roll the dough into a twelve to fifteen inch circle and cut in flour. Put a large spoon of meat mixture on the dough and fold it over. Seal the edges with a fork or press it down with your fingers. Cook a few of these at a time in boiling salt water until the dough is done. Remove from the water and drain a few minutes then fry in a mixture of half butter and half oil or shortening until golden brown. These may be boiled ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for a day or so before they are fried. They may be kept for a longer time if they are placed between waxed paper after they are cooled, and placed in the freezer. They can be fried when needed.
