Sausage and Green Chile Strata

- CRISCO No-Stick Cooking Spray
- 1/4 cup (1/4 stick) Butter Flavor Crisco Shortening, melted
- 8 soft white bread slices, crusts trimmed
- 1/2 pound bulk sausage, crumbled and cooked
- 1 cup grated sharp cheddar
- 1 4-ounce can chopped green chiles (canned)
- 6 large eggs
- 1 cup whole milk (do not use lowfat or nonfat)
- 1 teaspoon prepared mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon pepper
Instructions
- Spray an 8x8-inch glass baking dish with Crisco No Stick Cooking Spray.
- Brush bread slices with melted Butter Flavor Crisco. Place 4 slices in the prepared dish.
- Top with 1/2 the sausage, chiles and cheese. Top with 4 more slices of bread, then remaining sausage and chiles.
- Beat together eggs, milk, mustard, salt and pepper. Pour egg mixture over the layers and sprinkle with remaining cheese. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead, covered and refrigerated until ready to bake.)
- Preheat over to 350ºF. Bake strata until puffed and center is set, about 40 minutes. Let stand 5-10 minutes before cutting into squares; serve warm.
