    This cake is always a winner, and the topping is great. Now a cake that bakes and has a topping where no frosting is needed. Yes, I didn’t forget - no vanilla extract in recipe.



    List of Ingredients




    1 cup chopped dates
    1 teaspoon baking soda
    1 ¼ cups boiling water

    Mix dates and soda, pour in boiling water and let stand

    ¾ cup shortening (Crisco) (I use ¼ cup butter, ½ cup Crisco)
    1 cup white sugar
    3-4 tablespoons cocoa
    2 eggs, slightly beaten
    1 ½ cups AP Flour

    Recipe



    Cream shortening and sugar, add cocoa, beat in eggs. Then add flour and date mixture (alternate and stir in). Put in 9 x 13 pan that has been greased and floured.

    Topping--

    ½ - ¾ cup white sugar
    1 - 1 ½ cups chopped nuts
    2 cups chocolate chips

    Mix together and sprinkle over cake batter

    Bake 350 for 35 - 45 minutes - test with toothpick - don’t over bake
