I have been making this since 1978 when I lived in Maine and got this off an old lobster boat cook.
List of Ingredients
3 eggs beaten
1/2 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
1/2 cup sour milk. (just put a teaspoon of vinegar in it and let it set a bit)
1 t. salt
1 t. baking soda
5 T. cocoa
1 cup hot black coffeeRecipe
In bowl, cream eggs shortening,and sugar.Add 1/2 cup milk that you soured. In another bowl, sift flour, soda , salt and cocoa.
Add dry ingred. to egg mixture with a wire whisk,and stir in hot coffee.
Put into greased and floured 9x13 pan. Bake 350 degrees for 45 minutes .
Icing:
Put into flour sifter 1 pound of confectioners sugar and 3 to 4 T. cocoa.(I like 4 myslef) .When sifted add a piece of shortening about the size of a lemon. -then add twice as much marshmallow fluff.Then moisten with black coffee. (How much I dont know-, its less than 1/4 cup, till spreading consistency. When cake is cool. Frost
