Tasha Tudor's Christmas Cookie
List of Ingredients
The "submitter" stated that she uses them for tea at Christmas and gives them
away as presents. She likes to cut as two-inch fluted round cookies to put
in little boxes for gift giving, since they are easy to pack when smaller.
2 T. milk
1 t. baking soda
1 lb unsalted butter, softened
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 T. vanilla
5 c. unbleached flour
1/4 t. salt
Sugar for topping (this could be colored sugar)
Nutmeg, freshly grated for topping
Preheat the oven to 350 F.
1. Line 2 heavy-gauge alumnium cookie sheets w/parchment paper.
2. Place the milk in a measuring cup; add the baking soda and stir to
dissolve
3. In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter. Add the sugar, eggs and
vanilla, then mix. Sift in the flour and salt. Add the milk, mixing by hand
until the mixture becomes a ball of dough and doesn't stick to the bowl's
sides. Cover and chill for several hours.
4. Roll out the dough on a floured surface, as thin as possible. Cut out
the cookies with your best cookie cutters.
5. Place them on the cookie sheets, leaving room for the cookies to spread
as they bake.
6. Sprinkle with sugar and a bit of nutmeg before baking.
7. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until nicely browned and crisp.
