This recipe has been a very closely guarded secret in our family for years. My mother is very upset with my posting this recipe-but I feel that recipes are to be shared. Hope you enjoy this one!
1 cup butter
1 cup solid Crisco* solid vegetable shortening
1 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
3 large eggs
1 cup granulated white sugar
1/2 cup chopped almonds
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking soda
4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
Cream together the butter, Crisco and brown sugar until light. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Form into long rolls, wrap tightly in plastic food wrap and refrigerate 8 hours or overnight. Slice 1/4" thick and place on baking or cookie sheets about 2" apart. Bake at 375F for 5 to 10 minutes. Cool for 1 minute on baking or cookies sheets before removing to cool competely on wire racks.
This is a classic German Christmas cookie recipe-could be used for teething babies, and is also great as a "dunking" cookie-in your coffee, tea, milk or hot cocoa. The flavor is similar to the "Windmill" cookies they used to sell in the grocery stores.
*This recipe has been "modernized" for modern kitchens, and retains all of the great flavor as the original recipe.
