Bacon or salt pork
Corn meal
• Cook bacon or salt pork in a frying pan to draw out the fat.
• Extract the meat.
• Mix fat with water and corn meal into a dough.
• Fry in the pan or wrap the dough around a ramrod and hold over the fire till it bakes.

This soldier’s recipe from the Civil War was called “cush” or “slosh.” No doubt the man who inspired terror in the hearts of Yankees in Loudoun, John S. Mosby, the “Gray Ghost” of the Confederacy, tasted it more than once over the campfire.
