    Schkoladen Brezeln [ Chocolate Pretzels]

    List of Ingredients




    To make 25 pretzels:
    1/4 lb. (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened,
    1/4 cup sugar,
    1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa,
    3 Tbls. hot water,
    2 cups all-purpose flour,
    1 egg, lightly beaten,
    1 tsp. vanilla.

    In large mixing bowl, cream the butter and 1/4 cup of sugar together,
    dissolve cocoa in the hot water, let it cool to room temp. and beat into
    the butter sugar mixture. Beat in flour a cup at a time until it has
    been absorbed, add the egg and vanilla. Pat and shape the dough into a
    cylinder about 7 inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Preheat oven to
    350 degrees. Slice the dough crosswise into 3/8 inch rounds and roll
    each slice between your hands to make a rope-like-strip about 14 inches
    long and 1/4 inches in diameter. Shape each rope into a pretzel as shown
    above. (Whoops - guess you'll have to go to the store and look at a
    pretzel - actually two small e's back to back). Arrange pretzels 1 inch
    apart on ungreased baking sheets and bake in the middle of the oven for
    10 mins. or until they are firm to the touch. Cool on cake rack.
