French Toast w/Sausage Casserole

1/4 cup light Karo syrup
3/4 cup butter or margarine
1 cup (heaping) brown sugar
1/4 cup water
12 slices bread
8 eggs, beaten
1 1/2 cups milk
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 tsp. salt
1 pound sausage, fried, crumbled and drained
Recipe
Bring first 4 ingredients to a boil in a medium saucepan.
Pour into a 9x13x2 inch baking pan.
Place 6 slices bread on top of syrup.
Spread sausage on top of bread.
Place remaining 6 slices bread on top of sausage.
Mix beaten eggs, milk, vanilla and salt and pour over all.
Bake at 375 degrees F. for 45 minutes to 1 hour until set.
When toast is done flip into a cookie sheet with sides,
so the syrup side is up, for serving.
This is good to fix ahead of time and refrigerate
overnight and bake the next morning. .................................
