4 slices white bread
2/3 cup milk
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
2/3 cup shortening
2 beaten eggs
1 teaspoon finely shredded orange peel
1/4 cup orange juice
2 cups nipped pitted dates or raisins
2/3 cup dried mixed candied fruits and peels
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1/2 cup all purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
Orange Sauce
Orange Sauce:
1 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon orange peel
1 tablespoon orange juice
3 tablespoons sifted powdered sugarRecipe
Tear bread into pieces; combine with milk. Let stand 3 minutes. Beat in brown sugar and shortening. Add eggs, orange peel and orange juice. Stir in dates, candied fruits and nuts. Combine flour, baking soda and allspice; add to fruit mixture.
Spoon mixture into 6 greased 4 inch individual fluted tube pans or 10-ounce custard cups. Cover with foil. Bake at 325 degrees until tooth pick inserted near center comes out clean. (Allow 35 to 40 minutes for tube pans or 40 to 50 minutes for custard cups). Cook 10 minutes. Remove from pans or cups; cool on rack.
To serve, wrap each pudding in a piece of foil; reheat at 350 degree oven 20 to 25 minutes. Spoon orange sauce over top.
Orange Sauce:
Combine listed ingredients. Cover. Chill up to 1 week.
