Sturbridge Sorcery Bread
No idea of the derivation of this recipe's name, nor of its origin. It may have come from the old Confidential Chat food column in the Boston Globe, many years ago. Or it could have come from some church or community cookbook. Wherever it came from, though, it's almost bewitchingly good.
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. grated nutmeg
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 egg, beaten
1 cup applesauce
Preheat oven to 350º F. Mix all ingredients together, stirring just enough to moisten. Pour into a greased and floured 9x5-inch baking pan. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Allow to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before removing from pan.
