Mama makes this cake each Christmas. It has become a required part of our holiday dinner. She has tried to teach me to make it but it just isn't the same. Hope that you will enjoy this cake as much as we do.
List of Ingredients
1/2 cup shortening
1 1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 oz red food coloring
2 tbsp cocoa
2 1/2 cup plain flour
1/8 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp soda
1 cup buttermilk
1tbsp white vinegar
1 tsp butter flavoring
Icing For Red Velvet Cake
3 tbsp plain flour
1 cup butter, margarine, or Crisco
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup milk
1 cup sugar
Recipe
Cream shortening, sugar, eggs. Make a paste with food coloring and cocoa. Add to cream mixture. Add salt and flour to mixture then add buttermilk and vanilla.
Alternating add soda and vinegar to above mixture DO NOT BEAT just blend mixture.
Bake in greased pans at 350 for 30 minutes.
Icing For Red Velvet Cake
Cook flour and milk on low heat till thick.* Cool.
Cream sugar and butter and vanilla until fluffy. Add to cooked mixture. Beat til like whipped cream. Frost cooled layers.
Hint: Cook flour and milk while cake is baking. By time cake is cool the cooked mixture will be cool enough for rest of ingredients
